When we think of vehicles, we think of mileage, power and top speed but we less consideration to one important aspect of any vehicle, braking. For riding a motorcycle with confidence, safety system must definitely be number one.

In particular, the first step in preventing accidents is braking systems which are currently available in two types: Drum brakes and Disc brakes and how do these two brakes work? How are they different? What are the advantage and disadvantage ? In order to know which type of brake are suitable for you. Let’s follow CAMEL TIRE !

First of all, you must know that drum brake is a technology that has been used since the early days of automotive development and it has been developed continuously until it became a disc brake. However, drum brake was not lost from the world because with the efficiency that can still be achieved at a high level, so some cars and motorcycles are still using drum brake.

The drum brake works on the principle that uses friction caused by a set of shoes or pads that press outward against a rotating cylinder-shaped part called a brake drum. When you push the brake pedal, it causes the brake shoes to expand outwards and rub against the drum. The friction between the brake linings and the drum causes the drum to stop rotating; thereby stopping the wheel.

Advantage : Does not require much braking force to slow down or stop the vehicle, has a high stopping power. It suitable for carrying heavy items, have slightly lower frequency of maintenance because it is a close system.
Disadvantage : It’s difficult for heat transfer, slow response, poor drainage, difficult to maintenance.

Disc brake uses the calipers to squeeze pairs of pads against a disc or a rotor to create friction and slow down the rotation of a shaft. The brake caliper is the assembly which houses the brake pads and attached to the wheel. Also, the caliper does not move with the wheels but the piston is still connected to the brake cable so when you hit the brake, the piston will work by pushing the brake pads to squeeze the disc brake and it will create friction to stop the car.

Advantage : Brake discs are capable of dissipating heat from its surfaces as the friction area and vents are open to air compared to drum, quick response and easy for maintenance.
Disadvantages : less brake power, brake pad worn out so quickly, need more stopping force than drum but have small effort of pressing down on the pedal and the price is expensive.

How is it? For the information of disc brakes and drum brakes that CAMEL TIRE has brought it to you today. If we know how these two brakes work differently and know what are the pros and cons? It will make us more confidence in riding, right? Don’t forget to choose CAMEL tires, we have been with Thai for over 53 years with TIS standards and international quality.
